The idea took shape when I was in Venice and I reflected on the story of the Venetians, people who, rather than accepting the limitations of a marshy, inhospitable lagoon, quite literally created land where none existed. Through experimentation, bold risk-taking, and relentless adaptation, they built new surface area, transforming swampland into the foundations of a thriving republic.
